Castle Kennedy and Garden

Described as the ‘one of the showplaces of Galloway’ these magical gardens are situated on an isthmus between two large natural lochs. The inspiration of the 2nd Earl of Stair in the 1730’s, the gardens extend to 75 acres of landscaped terraces and avenues, and contain the romantic ruined 16th Century Castle Kennedy at one end, and the 19th Century Lochinch Castle at the other.

Perfect for exploring the gardens are famous for their colourful displays of Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Embothriums. The avenues contain many specimen trees grown from original seed brought to this country over 100 years, including some collected by Hooker. There is a two acre circular water-lily pond and the Monkey Puzzle Avenue is unique in size and was planted in 1896.

There’s always something new to experience in the gardens and particularly in the Walled Garden in the later summer months. The warming influence of the Gulf Stream allows a remarkable collection of rare and tender plants from the world’s warmer climes to flourish outdoors. Thousands of flowers are on view throughout the year and seasonal guides of flowering plants are available at the entrance.

The gardens border onto a wildlife refuge on the White Loch which is a designated Site of Scientific Interest for its breeding wader and wintering wildfowl. Visitors can enjoy easy viewing from the loch shores and occasionally otters and osprey fishing.

Four carefully planned walks of different lengths and interests have been designed for visitors. These reveal the full garden experience throughout the seasons including the snowdrops early in the year as well as many woodland and loch-side walks.

For a quick coffee, a light lunch of a delicious cream tea eating in the tearoom is a delightful experience. Charmingly situated it offers unparalleled views of Castle Kennedy throughout the year. In addition there is a Plant Centre which sells a wide selection of plants, many of which can be found growing in the grounds
